CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Conserved Areas and Territories – Global Support Initiative (ICCA – GSI) Phase 2
The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), awards grants on a competitive basis to civil society organisations for environmental initiatives that also promote livelihood enhancement.
Since 2014, the Global Support Initiative to territories and areas conserved by Indigenous Peoples and local communities (ICCA-GSI) has been providing direct financial support to improve the recognition and overall effectiveness of biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods and resilience to climate change effects in ICCAs.
Phase 2 of the ICCA-GSI was launched to continue this work while focusing on the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) 2030 Targets
Catalytic NGO must be:
● A well-established local NGO that has strong experience in and commitment to ICCAs, indigenous peoples’ issues and biodiversity conservation;
● Familiar with the Global ICCA registry, Protected Planet Platform and Mapeo for ICCAs. Can provide training to IPs and LCs on the use of these tools.
● Ready to support the other ICCA GSI grantees in a self-strengthening process; conduct monitoring and evaluation of the ICCA portfolio; and guide the use of the “Resilience and Security Index”.
● Ready to collaborate with the SGP office and the ICCA grantees to develop Knowledge Management products.
● Ready to produce end-of-project reports in collaboration with the SGP office and the grantees, and within the stipulated timeframe.
● Ready to implement over a period of 18 months
● Maximum grant is USD 50,000
Regular grants will be awarded to:
● Only two (2) or three (3) local civil society organisations that are duly registered.
● CSO with over three years of proven evidence of working in or near an ICCA – an area or territory that is conserved by Indigenous Peoples or Local Communities with a legal identity.
● CSO with over three years of proven experience in empowering Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to improve the governance and management of ICCAs
● Proponent who provides a brief (100 words maximum) on the proposed ICCA to work in, including name, GPS location, legal status, size, current state of ICCA, etc., when sending a request for proposal template.
● Key outputs include: 1) enhanced biodiversity conservation; 2) increased resilience against climate change; 3) empowered communities for improved livelihoods; and 4) ICCA becomes a member of the global ICCA Consortium.
● CSO committed to implementing activities aligned to targets 3, 21,22, and 23 of the GBF.
● Project to be implemented over a period of at least 18 months.
● The grant is a maximum of USD50,000 per project.
● CBOs, youth groups, PWD groups and women groups are encouraged to apply.
Co-financing
UNDP requires that applicants demonstrate co-financing. The applicant should show in the proposal the amount of co-financing it will raise (both in cash and in-kind) during the implementation of the project and indicate the source of the co-financing.
