Bukola

Bukola, a graduate in economics from Lagos State University, embarked on a distinctive journey into the realm of small and medium-sized enterprises, where she passionately pursued her dream as a fashion designer. This entrepreneurial endeavour not only fuelled her ambition but also facilitated her education.

However, the tumultuous waves of the pandemic brought unforeseen challenges to her path. The COVID-19 lockdowns brought her fashion business to a grinding halt, making it impossible for her to create and sell outfits. In the face of adversity, Bukola displayed remarkable adaptability. She shifted her focus to producing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and made the difficult decision to reduce her staff's salaries to keep the business afloat.

Bukola's perseverance during this trying period caught the attention of a remarkable opportunity. She was chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the UN COVID-19 Basket Fund, a lifeline she had never anticipated.

Bukola's dedication and resourcefulness have led to the production of over 502 scrubs, 420 lab coats, over 100 bedspreads for hospitals, and more than 2,000 face masks from 2020 to the present day.

This initiative was launched to complement the ongoing efforts to mobilize resources in support of Nigeria's COVID-19 Multi-Sectorial Pandemic Response Plan, developed by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

The UN intervention not only provided the support Bukola urgently needed but also equipped her with essential resources and training to fortify her business. According to Bukola, Participants in the training were provided with blank cheques to list the equipment needed for their businesses and surprisingly, some received more than they requested, leading to the thriving success of their enterprises.

Bukola, having attended numerous trainings in the past, emphasized that this specific one was well-organized and professional. The facilitators ensured inclusive participation and engagement throughout the training. ILO's training made Bukola realize that the stitches in every garment sewn are intended to adhere to specific measurements and sizes. She also learnt about the number of yards in a thread roll while stating that many fashion designers often overlook this aspect.

Bukola shared that UNIDO, understanding the participants' needs, assigned them personal consultants. These dedicated consultants not only offered guidance but also played a crucial role in boosting her confidence through unwavering support. Additionally, UN Women connected her with a mentor who not only motivated her but consistently shared various opportunities, aiding Bukola's growth in her entrepreneurial journey.

Furthermore, Bukola received valuable assistance from ILO for her business plans, ensuring they met high standards, which helped her secure grants. This support contributed significantly to her success. In June, her achievements were recognized when she won the Women in Africa Laureate, ranking among the top 20 in Nigeria and earning a grant in dollars.

Moreover, Bukola found a sense of achievement, which she referred to as "bragging rights," upon receiving an email with logos from UNIDO, UN Women, and the EU. This email provided the official approval to use their logos on her products, signifying the organizations' endorsement of the high quality of her products. It served as a significant acknowledgment of her hard work and dedication.

Additionally, like numerous others selected for this project, she adapted to the evolving landscape, restructured her business, and explored new avenues for growth. Her dedication and resourcefulness have led to the production of over 502 scrubs, 420 lab coats, over 100 bedspreads for hospitals, and more than 2,000 face masks from 2020 to the present day.

Yet, Bukola's story goes beyond personal success. She generously shared her knowledge, training over 1,000 women in her craft, enabling them to embark on their own journeys of success.

The UN Basket Fund emerged as a pivotal force in rebuilding Bukola's business, enhancing her resilience, and empowering her to thrive amid the uncertainties of the pandemic. Her story is a testament to the power of human determination and the transformative impact of initiatives like the UN Basket Fund in Nigeria that was implemented by the following UN Agencies - UNDP, UN Women, ILO, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNIDO and UNAIDS.
