Ode to Ma’ Ahunna Eziakonwa
June 15, 2026
There are people who move through the world like deep roots through soil — unseen by many, yet holding everything together, feeding what is yet to grow. People who enter a room and the light shifts, not because they demand it, but because something in them simply refuses to dim. People who carry a quiet fire - the kind that does not consume, but illuminates. That warms without burning. That shows others, in the dark, where the door is. People who do not just walk a path, they clear one. And long after they have moved on, others find their footing in the ground those feet prepared. People who create possibilities through their path.
Ma’ Ahunna Eziakonwa is that kind of person.
Today, I am overjoyed to congratulate Ma’ Ahunna Eziakonwa on her appointment by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as his Special Adviser for Africa at the level of United Nations Under Secretary-General. As someone who has had the privilege of growing under her tutelage and witnessing her passion for this continent up close, I cannot adequately describe the pride swelling in my chest right now.
Ahunna's story is Africa's story. Nearly three decades of relentless, purposeful service - from Sierra Leone and Liberia during some of their darkest hours, to the hills of Lesotho, the highlands of Ethiopia, the resilient streets of Uganda, and the highest chambers of the United Nations in New York. Through every posting, every negotiation, every crisis and every breakthrough, she has carried Africa in her heart. And she has made every room she entered larger for everyone who came after her.
For decades, Ahunna has been a tireless champion of Africa and its people. Across countries, institutions and communities, she has consistently challenged us to think bigger about what Africa can achieve and to invest boldly in those who will shape its future.
She has been a powerful advocate for young people through #YouthConnekt and African Young Women Leaders Fellowship Programme, for women's economic empowerment through #HerAfCFTA, for innovation and entrepreneurship through #Timbuktoo, for democratic governance through the Africa Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions, and for resilience and sustainable development. She has helped elevate a generation of African leaders, innovators and changemakers, while reminding the world that Africa's greatest asset is not just her minerals or markets, but her people.
What has always distinguished Ahunna is her unwavering belief that Africa should not be viewed through the lens of its challenges, but through the scale of its possibilities. Whether championing opportunities for youth, expanding pathways for women entrepreneurs, supporting innovation ecosystems, or advancing Africa's competitiveness in a rapidly changing world, she has consistently pushed for solutions that place African talent, leadership and agency at the centre.
Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment. The multilateral system is facing profound tests, yet it also has an opportunity to reinvent itself for a new era - one in which Africa's voice, ideas and leadership will be indispensable to building shared prosperity, advancing climate action and securing a more peaceful world. Few people are better positioned to help shape that future. She brings to this role the same vision, courage, humility and determination that have inspired so many of us over the years. As Africa's place in the world continues to grow, so too will the importance of leaders who can bridge global ambition with African realities and aspirations. Ahunna is one of those leaders.
For the young African girl watching today — in Lagos, in Lusaka, in Lomé, in Lilongwe — let this sink in. A daughter of Nigeria’s soil, steeped in the cultures and complexities of this continent, now stands as the United Nations Secretary-General's voice on Africa.
For the young African girl watching today — in Lagos, in Lusaka, in Lomé, in Lilongwe — let this sink in. A daughter of Nigeria’s soil, steeped in the cultures and complexities of this continent, now stands as the United Nations Secretary-General's voice on Africa. She did not arrive here by accident. She arrived here through decades of integrity, courage, brilliance and an unshakeable love for her people.
Ma’ Ahunna, you have opened doors that will never close again. You have shaped conversations that will echo far beyond your tenure. You have demonstrated — with every decision, every posting, every stand you took — what it means to lead with both excellence and empathy, ambition and accountability, personal achievement and collective purpose.
Thank you for the foundation you have laid, the fire you have kept burning, and the path you have cleared for those of us still finding our footing. The best is still ahead — for you, and because of you, for all of us.
Congratulations, Ma'. This is a proud moment for Nigeria, for Africa, for the United Nations family and for all who believe in the continent's limitless potential. I am proud as I serve as your Resident Representative for UNDP in Nigeria.🌍
