A New Secondary School Opens Doors to Opportunity in Nampula

July 2, 2026

The new Piqueira Secondary School has been handed over, expanding access to quality secondary education for around 480 students and helping reduce school dropout—especially among girls.

For years, completing primary education marked the end of the educational journey for many young people in Piqueira, a community in Moma District, Nampula Province. Without a nearby secondary school, students who finished Grade 9 often faced long and costly journeys to continue their studies. For many families, these barriers proved insurmountable, leading to high school dropout rates—particularly among girls, who were disproportionately affected by distance, safety concerns and financial constraints.

On 8 April 2026, that reality began to change.

The provisional handover of the new Piqueira Secondary School marks a significant milestone in expanding access to quality education and strengthening human development in northern Mozambique. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and implemented by the Provincial Directorate of Planning and Finance in close collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of Education, the new school brings secondary education closer to the community, creating new opportunities for hundreds of young people to continue learning and pursue their aspirations.

Designed to provide a safe, inclusive and enabling learning environment, the school is far more than a collection of classrooms. The new facility includes fully equipped classrooms, school furniture, a borehole water supply system, a school garden and orchard that supports both nutrition and practical learning, and a sports field that promotes students' physical well-being and holistic development. Together, these investments create an environment where students can learn, grow and thrive.

Each year, the school is expected to directly benefit approximately 480 students from Piqueira and surrounding communities. Beyond those enrolled, the investment will positively impact hundreds of families by reducing the financial and logistical burdens associated with accessing secondary education, allowing more children to remain in school and complete their education closer to home.

The initiative is expected to make a particularly meaningful difference for girls. By reducing travel distances and improving access to safe learning environments, the school addresses some of the structural barriers that contribute to girls' school dropout, helping create more equitable educational opportunities and supporting their continued participation in education. Investing in girls' education not only transforms individual lives but also contributes to healthier families, stronger communities and more resilient local economies.

The handover also represents the transition from construction to operation, with local authorities and community members reaffirming their commitment to maintaining the infrastructure and ensuring that it continues to serve future generations. Their ownership reflects a shared understanding that sustainable development is achieved not only through infrastructure, but also through strong local institutions and active community engagement.

The project exemplifies the vision of UNDP Mozambique's Country Programme Document (CPD) 2026–2030, which recognizes that strengthening human capital and expanding equitable access to quality social services are fundamental to accelerating sustainable development. By working alongside national and provincial institutions, UNDP supports integrated development solutions that reduce inequalities, build resilience and expand opportunities, particularly for women, young people and underserved communities.

The new secondary school also contributes directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It demonstrates how strategic investments in education generate lasting benefits that extend well beyond the classroom, strengthening communities and creating the foundations for inclusive economic and social development.

The collaboration between UNDP, provincial government institutions and local communities illustrates the power of partnerships to deliver tangible development results where they are needed most. By combining national priorities with local knowledge and community ownership, the project responds directly to the aspirations of the people it serves.

As the first students prepare to walk through its doors, Piqueira Secondary School stands as more than a new public facility. It is a symbol of hope, opportunity and resilience—a place where young people can build the knowledge and skills they need to shape their futures, contribute to their communities and drive Mozambique's sustainable development for generations to come.
