The Socioeconomic Impact of Covid-19 on the Urban Informal Economy in Mozambique

March 10, 2022

This report presents the main findings coming out of the Covid-19 Informal Sector Survey (CISS), a longitudinal study of a group of 500 informal workers operating in Maputo. Implemented between 2020 and 2021, the CISS survey was designed to monitor over time the socioeconomic impact of the pandemic on the urban informal economy in Mozambique. The report provides key insights into how the Covid-19 crisis has affected the lives of informal workers and that of their families. The study finds that the pandemic has had a very severe impact on informal workers and their families, affecting their businesses and livelihoods, while forcing them to take drastic measures to cope with the negative impact of Covid-19. The CISS study is the result of a partnership between UNDP and the Mozambican Ministry of Economy and Finance.
