Maputo, 8 July 2026 — The Government of Mozambique, through the Ministry of Planning and Development (MPD), today convened the International Conference on Inclusive and Sustainable Development of Mozambique: From Assessment to Action, bringing together national and international stakeholders to reflect on the country's development journey over the past 25 years and define strategic priorities for a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future.

Co-financed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and development partners, the conference provides a high-level platform for dialogue among government institutions, academia, the private sector, civil society, development partners, youth representatives, the Mozambican diaspora and international experts. Through an inclusive and evidence-based exchange, participants will assess development progress, identify persistent challenges and help shape the policy choices needed to accelerate sustainable development.

The conference takes place at a defining moment for Mozambique as the country advances a new strategic planning cycle guided by the National Development Strategy 2025–2044 (ENDE), the Thinking Mozambique 2050 Vision and the Government's Five-Year Programme 2025–2029. It represents an important opportunity to strengthen national consensus around the reforms and investments required to achieve long-term prosperity while ensuring that no one is left behind.

Held under the theme "From Assessment to Action," the conference seeks to undertake a comprehensive review of Mozambique's development experience since 2000, including the implementation of the Agenda 2025 framework and subsequent national development strategies. Building on lessons learned, the discussions will explore pathways to accelerate structural transformation, strengthen institutions and promote more inclusive, resilient and sustainable economic growth.

Key thematic discussions focus on economic diversification, human capital development, governance and institutional effectiveness, climate resilience, financing for sustainable development, digital transformation and Mozambique's integration within regional and global development agendas. The conference also reinforces national ownership by ensuring broad participation across sectors, generations and institutions.

As a long-standing development partner, UNDP is proud to support this strategic national dialogue, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening national capacities for inclusive, evidence-based and forward-looking development planning.

The conference reflects UNDP's commitment to supporting integrated solutions that address interconnected development challenges by strengthening governance, promoting inclusive economic transformation, advancing climate resilience and accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also reinforces the importance of aligning national priorities with global and regional frameworks, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union's Agenda 2063.

A defining feature of the conference is its strong emphasis on inclusion. Women, young people, students, members of the Mozambican diaspora, representatives of the Children's Parliament, academia, civil society and the private sector are actively contributing to the dialogue, ensuring that the country's long-term development vision reflects the aspirations and perspectives of all Mozambicans.

The conference is expected to deliver a comprehensive assessment of Mozambique's development performance between 2000 and 2025, identify strategic priorities for implementing the National Development Strategy 2025–2044, and generate practical recommendations to accelerate structural transformation and sustainable development. The outcomes are also expected to strengthen policy coherence, reinforce partnerships and contribute to a shared national vision for Mozambique's future.

As Mozambique looks towards 2050, the conference marks an important milestone in reaffirming the country's commitment to inclusive, sustainable and people-centred development. Through its continued partnership with the Government of Mozambique and a broad range of national and international stakeholders, UNDP remains committed to supporting nationally led solutions that expand opportunities, strengthen resilience and improve the lives of all Mozambicans.
