Macomia, one of the regions most affected by Cyclone Kenneth in 2019, is experiencing a resurgence thanks to the support of the Mozambique Recovery Mechanism (MRF). Essential infrastructure, destroyed by the cyclone's force, is being rebuilt with a focus on resilience and sustainability, ensuring better living conditions for the local population.

UNDP's Role in Post-Disaster Recovery: Rebuilding Lives in Mozambique After Cyclones

In Mozambique, UNDP has played a crucial role in post-disaster response and recovery, particularly following the devastation caused by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth in 2019 and Cyclone Freddy in 2023. These extreme events led to widespread destruction, loss of lives, and the displacement of thousands of families, with Zambézia Province being among the most affected by Cyclone Freddy. Cyclone Kenneth, in turn, had a devastating impact on Cabo Delgado Province, including the district of Macomia, where it destroyed essential public infrastructure, further exacerbating the vulnerability of the local population.

To address these crises, UNDP, in partnership with the Government of Mozambique and the international community, launched the MRF, a financing mechanism that supports the sustainable recovery of affected communities. In Macomia, this effort has been evident in the rehabilitation of government buildings, health units, schools, and water supply systems, providing essential services to the population.
