STEMinists unleashed: Journey for gender equality
April 28, 2023
Pristina hosted a significant conference on April 24 that focused on the vital role of women in STEM. This event represented an important step forward in promoting gender equality in Kosovo, underscored by the continuous support of UNDP Kosovo in empowering women within STEM fields.
The conference boasted notable speakers, including the Gender Programme Manager from UNDP Montenegro Kaca Djurickovic who participated as a distinguished panellist. The #STEMinists conference served as a dynamic platform that united prominent stakeholders and accomplished women in STEM. Together, they cultivated networking opportunities, shared their diverse experiences, and kindled inspiration for individuals aspiring to pursue careers in these dynamic fields.
The event welcomed representatives from the UNDP-facilitated Kosovo Women in STEM Network and the Western Balkans Women in STEM Network. Their presence underscored the shared dedication to promoting gender equality while engaging in meaningful discussions about the significance of SHE STEMinists. Valuable recommendations were put forth to enhance female representation within STEM disciplines.
At UNDP Kosovo and Western Balkans, there is a firm belief in the immense potential of women to drive digital transformation and lead sustainable initiatives. The dedication remains steadfast in supporting initiatives that champion gender equality, thereby empowering women to thrive in STEM fields. This commitment aims to bolster their economic empowerment and catalyze progress towards the dual transition of sustainability and technological advancement.
In her impactful messages, Kaca Djurickovic emphasized the invaluable contributions made by women in STEM. Despite these contributions and the compelling evidence that diversity enriches companies, women still encounter formidable obstacles while pursuing and advancing in STEM careers. Despite being the majority of STEM graduates in numerous countries, women and girls continue to grapple with entrenched patriarchal norms and systemic challenges. Excluding girls, women, their voices, and leadership from STEM fields is a luxury our societies cannot afford. The future economies unequivocally require the active participation of women in STEM.
Breaking down these gender barriers necessitates a collective and coordinated effort, providing a platform for diverse stakeholders and women in STEM to collaborate, exchange experiences, and inspire others. UNDP remains steadfast across the Western Balkans in its tireless efforts to empower women in STEM, striving towards a future where gender equality thrives within the realms of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
