On 30 April, 3 tons of intervention materials, including biodegradable sorbent based on natural peat, were delivered to Moldova for rapid response actions in cases of water pollution with hydrocarbons. The materials were provided by Sweden and UNDP Moldova to the Ministry of Environment, with the aim of strengthening response capacities to environmental incidents and limiting their impact on aquatic ecosystems and the population.

In the coming period, another lot of oil containment materials will be delivered, consisting of absorbent booms, pads, and rolls.

“Rapid and effective interventions in cases of pollution are essential to protect a strategic water resource such as the Nistru River. Through this contribution, partners are reinforcing their support for the development of modern response mechanisms and for strengthening the capacities of responsible institutions, with a direct impact on environmental protection and public health,” said Ludmila Gofman, Project Manager at UNDP Moldova.

Also, as part of the project “Supporting the Moldovan authorities in the sustainable management of the Nistru River”, funded by Sweden and implemented by UNDP, two batches of reagents and consumables were also provided to the Water Quality Laboratory of the Environmental Agency. This will contribute to improving the monitoring and analysis of water quality parameters.

Sweden and UNDP support efforts for the integrated management of water resources, with a focus on the Nistru River and its transboundary management.
