“Panorama Beleului” and “Dealul Cămilei” – two new touristic routes launched in southern Moldova
April 29, 2026
“Panorama Beleului” is a touristic route of approximately 5 km which can be completed in 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail offers visitors the opportunity to admire the lake and the “Prutul de Jos” Nature Reserve from above, making it ideal for hiking and nature observation.
The “Dealul Cămilei” touristic route starts in the village of Văleni and leads to the spring. The route follows winding paths and requires moderate effort. The total distance is 2.5 km and can be covered in 60 minutes. This trail offers breathtaking views of the Golden Hills and the village of Văleni, harmoniously blending nature with the area’s history and traditions.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote the “Lower Prut” Meadow, a remarkable natural area where rich biodiversity, local traditions, and the beauty of the landscapes shape the authentic identity of the country’s south.
The new touristic routes were made possible thanks to support from the project “Conservation and sustainable management of wetlands with focus on high-nature value areas in the Prut River basin”, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and UNDP Moldova. The initiative is implemented by the Ministry of the Environment through the National Office for the Implementation of Environmental Projects, in partnership with the National Tourism Office of the Republic of Moldova, the Cahul District Council, the “Moldsilva” Agency, the “Silva-Sud” Cahul State Enterprise, the Văleni Village Council, and the Slobozia Mare Village Council.
Since 2021, the Cahul region has had its own brand, a first for the Republic of Moldova, made possible with the support of the UNDP and the European Union. In 2024, the observation deck of the “Lower Prut” Biosphere Reserve was inaugurated in Slobozia Mare. The platform was equipped with a telescope, offering a panoramic view of Lake Beleu, and was built and fitted out by the “VIA Cahul” Tourism Cluster, which received 100,000 euros in assistance from the “EU4Moldova: Focal Regions” programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP. Previously, a tourist guide for the Cahul region was developed, 62 tourist information signs and four tourist information panels were installed, and several tourism-related businesses were equipped with necessary equipment and received mentoring.
Through its projects, UNDP has supported the development of 25 additional tourist routes and over 45 guesthouses on both banks of the Nistru, which received financial assistance to preserve their traditional atmosphere.
UNDP also supports new trends and unique offerings, such as glamping facilities (a form of camping that includes modern and comfortable amenities) operational year-round, capsule hotels and hostels, and innovations in agritourism. The support provided by UNDP and its partners has also stimulated the development of related activities, such as animal husbandry, agriculture, and handicrafts, leading to the diversification of tourism packages and the preservation of a large number of old houses.
