The Scandinavian countries - Denmark, Norway, and Sweden - are contributing to Moldova's Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund (EVRF), through agreements with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Denmark is offering $US5.59 million, Norway - $8.86 million, and Sweden - $9.9 million. The funds will enable the Government of Moldova to cover compensations in the current winter period for energy-vulnerable households.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Governments of Denmark, Norway and Sweden who showed us their generosity and friendship during difficult times for our country. This donation will be used to help the most vulnerable and to keep them warm and safe during this cold season. Your support and kindness are much appreciated and we are honored to have you as a trustful partner in social protection,” said Alexei Buzu, Minister of Labour and Social Protection.
“UNDP appreciates Denmark, Norway, and Sweden's significant contribution to the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund of Moldova and the solidarity with Moldovan people, who face the surge of increasing energy prices. At the same time, our work doesn’t stop at short-term relief. Together with our partners, we’re committed to making Moldova’s energy system more resilient, ensuring that people have access to affordable, sustainable energy in the long run,” said Daniela Gasparikova, UNDP Resident Representative to the Republic of Moldova.
The Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund (EVRF) was created in 2022 by the Moldovan Government with the support of the European Union, Slovakia, and UNDP and since its launch, it has provided compensation to over 895,000 households - around 75% of Moldova's total.
UNDP supported the Government in mobilizing resources for the Fund. In the 2022-2023 season, UNDP facilitated a contribution of US$10 million to the EVRF from Sweden and $6.67 million from Switzerland. In the 2023-2024 season, Sweden contributed $9.63 million and Italy contributed €5 million to the Fund through UNDP.
UNDP, Italy, and other development partners continue to provide support also in the 2024-2025 cold season to ensure the functioning of the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund, the modernization of the IT system, and the work of the dedicated call center.
