The sector meetings on Moldova’s climate change adaptation planning process have started. The initiative belongs to the Ministry of Environment, which develops the National Climate Change Adaptation Program and its Action Plan, with support of the UNDP Moldova project "Advancing Moldova’s national climate change adaptation planning", funded by the Green Climate Fund.

The discussions tackled the proposed adaptation measures for five priority sectors (health, forestry, energy, water, and transport), and identification of the key indicators to monitor the process of adaptation to climate change.

Ecaterina Melnicenco, a UNDP consultant, emphasized that floods, droughts, and other extreme meteorological events have a negative impact on the country's economy and the population's well-being: "Adaptation starts with each of us. Higher temperatures, for example, have become more common in the recent years than a few decades ago. We anticipate that the situation will be even more complicated. We need to understand what can be changed to minimize the negative impact of climate change.”

The Republic of Moldova is one of the most vulnerable countries in Europe to climate change. According to the Paris Agreement, which represents an international framework for adaptation, ratified by the Republic of Moldova in 2017, the countries committed to strengthen their efforts in the face of the dangers induced by climate change.
