Raising Awareness for Sustainable Land Management in Mauritius and Rodrigues
October 23, 2025
Government, academia, civil society, and private sector representatives joined forces to exchange insights and co-develop a roadmap for a national programme aimed at raising awareness, strengthening local capacity, and promoting climate-resilient ecosystems to combat land degradation.
An inception workshop for the Development and Implementation of a Capacity Building and Awareness Raising Programme for Sustainable Land Management and Integrated Land Management was held on Thursday, 23 October 2025, under the GEF-funded Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Project, implemented by the Government of Mauritius and the UNDP in Mauritius.
The workshop marked the launch of a key milestone to empower stakeholders and the public with knowledge and skills to adopt sustainable and integrated land-use practices across Mauritius and Rodrigues. Participants from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector came together to share insights, align strategies, and co-design the roadmap for developing a national programme that will enhance awareness and build local capacity to address land degradation and promote climate-resilient ecosystems.
An inclusive and participatory approach lies at the heart of this process - ensuring that the voices, needs, and experiences of diverse groups inform both the communication strategy and the training materials. This approach will help shape effective, context-specific messages that inspire behavioural change and collective stewardship of land resources.
Following the inception workshop, the project will commence a capacity needs assessment. The findings from this assessment will inform the development of targeted training programs and outreach initiatives over the coming month further supporting Mauritius’ efforts to achieve sustainable land management and environmental resilience.
Through the SLM project, UNDP Mauritius and its partners continue to promote sustainability, inclusivity, and local ownership in advancing SDG 15: Life on Land and the broader 2030 Agenda.
