Building national capacity for long-term, inclusive and sustainable development
UNDP Supports the Government of Mauritius to Advance Vision 2050 Through Strategic Foresight Training
January 7, 2026
A three-day foresight training in support of Mauritius Vision 2050 is being held from 7 to 9 January 2026, marking a key step in strengthening the country’s long-term planning and strategic capacity. The training is organised by the Ministry of Financial Services and Economic Planning with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is facilitated by UNDP experts Bronwyn Williams and JT Mudge.
The training brings together government officials and key stakeholders to strengthen foresight and systems thinking in support of Mauritius Vision 2050. Foresight, as introduced during the training, is not about predicting the future but about exploring multiple possible futures in order to make better decisions today. Participants are guided to move beyond linear thinking and short-term planning and instead adopt a structured approach to understanding change, uncertainty and long-term transformation. Through practical exercises and facilitated discussions, the training encourages participants to reflect on what success could look like for Mauritius by 2050 and the pathways needed to achieve it.
Across the three days, the programme will cover key foresight concepts including horizon scanning, systems thinking, drivers of change and visioning tools. Participants will be introduced to practical frameworks that will help identify emerging trends, risks and opportunities across social, technological, economic, environmental, political and values-based dimensions. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how different systems interact and how change in one area can produce ripple effects across others.
By the end of the training, participants are expected to have strengthened their capacity to apply foresight tools within their respective institutions and policy processes. The skills developed will support more adaptive, evidence-informed decision-making and help ensure that Mauritius Vision 2050 remains a living, responsive framework capable of evolving with emerging challenges and opportunities.
This foresight training represents an important milestone in Mauritius’ journey towards long-term resilience and sustainable development, reinforcing the country’s commitment to proactive, inclusive and forward-looking governance. In this context, Vision 2050 aims to restore long-term thinking and strategic foresight while charting a clear path towards a high-income, inclusive and sustainable Mauritius. Anchored on the pillars of prosperity, sustainability and inclusion, it reflects a collective ambition to ensure that Mauritius remains resilient and competitive in an increasingly complex global landscape.
