The MauStats platform, a modern web-based data system developed by Statistics Mauritius in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was officially launched in Balaclava. The event coincided with the celebration of World Statistics Day under the theme “Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone”, and marked the 80th anniversary of Statistics Mauritius, which has long played a central role in measuring the nation’s socio-economic progress.

In today’s rapidly digitized world, where information moves at unprecedented speed and scale, the capacity to collect, analyse, and interpret reliable data has become fundamental to evidence-based decision-making. Quality data enables governments and institutions to better serve their populations, drive innovation, design responsive policies, and ensure that no one is left behind on the path toward sustainable and inclusive development. This highlights the critical importance of strong quality assurance systems to uphold the integrity of national data and ensure that statistics remain transparent, inclusive, and truly empowering for all.

The MauStats platform embodies this vision. Designed as a one-stop digital hub, it allows data to be collected, analysed, and shared through interactive dashboards and customizable visualisations. Built with open-source technology, MauStats adheres to international data exchange standards (SDMX) and supports transparent, efficient, and evidence-based policymaking at both national and local levels.

Turning Data into Insights and Insights into Progress

In his opening address, Mr. Mukesh Dawoonauth, Acting Director of Statistics Mauritius, commended Mauritius for its progress in ensuring access to qualitative and inclusive data. However, he cautioned that "some challenges persist such as data gaps, disparity in data literacy, and the rapid pace of technological change which requires to adapt continuously across all sectors of the economy.”

Ms. Alka Bhatia, UNDP Resident Representative, highlighted that the success of MauStats “not only depends on advanced technology but also on strong leadership, active user engagement, and alignment with national priorities.” She noted that the platform is fundamentally about people, hence the capacity-building sessions organised to ensure its optimal use and long-term sustainability. Ms. Bhatia reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to leveraging digitalisation to accelerate sustainable development and build more inclusive and forward-looking societies.

The Junior Minister of Finance, Honourable Dhaneshwar Damry explained that the Government has introduced measures to strengthen the transparency, impartiality, and independence of national statistical institutions. While Dr. the Honourable Avinash Ramtohul, Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, highlighted the importance of data confidentiality, integrity, immediacy, and traceability in a digital era.

The launch of the MauStats platform represents an important milestone in Mauritius’s digital and statistical evolution. It strengthens the country’s capacity to transform data into actionable knowledge and reinforces its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and evidence-based development.
