Strengthening Career Management Skills for UN Volunteers in Mauritius and Seychelles
September 28, 2026
Over the two days, 10 UN Volunteers from Mauritius and Seychelles explored practical approaches to career planning and professional growth in a rapidly evolving world of work.
Ten UN Volunteers serving across Mauritius and Seychelles came together on 24 and 25 September for a Capacity Development Learning Facility (CDLF) workshop focused on Career Management. Organised by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Indian Ocean Multi-Country Field Unit, the programme provided a valuable opportunity for peer learning, reflection and professional growth. This workshop formed part of UNV's broader learning portfolio, which equips volunteers with the skills and competencies needed to maximize their contributions during and beyond their assignments.
Over the two days, participants explored practical approaches to career planning and professional growth in a rapidly evolving world of work. Through a combination of presentations, interactive exercises and group work, the workshop covered topics such as career management, strategic job searches, skills gap analysis, personal branding, networking, application writing and competency-based interviews. Former UN Volunteers also shared insights from their professional journeys and experiences transitioning to new opportunities. The sessions encouraged participants to reflect on their strengths, values and aspirations while strengthening their confidence to navigate future career opportunities. The workshop also highlighted the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability in an increasingly dynamic employment landscape.
Volunteerism as a Pathway for Growth and Impact
While addressing the UNVs, Ms. Alka Bhatia, UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, reflected on the value of volunteers and their important contributions across the region: “The work you do is rather noble, because you are doing it out of a sense of service. It’s not about remuneration; it is about contributing your skills and passion towards inclusion and sustainable development.”
“With a rapidly evolving and competitive employment landscape, including within the UN system, it is more important than ever to proactively manage careers. I hope the volunteers leave this workshop with practical tools, renewed confidence, and a clear sense of direction to support their career aspirations.” Says Prisca Rakotomalala, Multi- Country Coordinator for UNV Indian Ocean
Zara Payen, UN Volunteer with UNFPA Mauritius and Seychelles, highlighted how her assignment has enabled her to broaden her skills and explore new areas of professional development. “Since becoming a UN Volunteer, I had the opportunity to learn a lot more, through both my supervisor and the UNV learning platform. If I have one takeaway from this workshop, it is to remain open to new opportunities. Volunteering has encouraged me to think more broadly about my career and the different paths I can pursue.”
Administered by UNDP, United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is the UN organization mandated to promote volunteerism and mobilize volunteers in support of peace and development worldwide. As part of UNV's ongoing investment in people, the CDLF will continue to empower volunteers with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to advance their careers while contributing meaningfully to sustainable development across the region.
