In Lilongwe, a growing technology and innovation hub is helping young Malawians transform ideas into businesses, gain future-ready digital skills and access opportunities in the rapidly expanding digital economy.

Founded and managed by Eugene Maseya, NxGen specializes in coding, robotics and emerging technologies. More than a training center, the hub is creating practical pathways for young innovators to develop solutions to real-world challenges, strengthen entrepreneurial skills and build sustainable enterprises.

The results are already visible. Through its programmes and enterprise support services, NxGen has contributed to the creation of 211 jobs, including 59 formally registered positions, demonstrating how technology-driven entrepreneurship can generate meaningful employment opportunities for young people.

These achievements have been made possible through support from the Zantchito Entrepreneurship and Access to Finance Programme, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with funding from the European Union. The programme is strengthening Malawi’s entrepreneurship ecosystem by supporting business development service providers, incubators and innovation hubs that help young entrepreneurs start, grow and sustain their businesses.

With support from Zantchito, NxGen has expanded its incubation services and strengthened its ability to guide entrepreneurs from idea generation to business growth. In its first cohort, the hub enrolled more than 80 pre-incubates, with 77 participants progressing to incubation and more than 25 advancing to post-incubation support

The demand for these services continues to grow. In January 2026, 85 young innovators joined Cohort 2, highlighting increasing interest among Malawian youth in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Beyond supporting individual entrepreneurs, the programme has helped strengthen NxGen as an institution. Through a US$30,000 grant awarded in late 2024, the hub enhanced its incubation services and expanded its team by recruiting a Technical Trainer and a Business Development Officer

These additions have improved the quality of mentorship, technical training and business advisory services available to emerging entrepreneurs.

Through the Zantchito support, NxGen has established links with AfriLabs in South Africa, creating new opportunities for networking, knowledge exchange and collaboration. This regional exposure is opening doors for Malawian innovators to connect with wider African innovation ecosystems and access new opportunities for growth.

NxGen’s story illustrates an important lesson for Malawi’s digital transformation journey: creating jobs in the digital economy requires more than talent alone. It depends on sustained investment in innovation hubs, skilled mentors, business support services, strong networks and opportunities that enable young people to turn ideas into viable enterprises.

Through the Zantchito Programme and the support of its funding partners, UNDP and the European Union are helping build an enabling environment where innovation can thrive. By strengthening hubs such as NxGen, the programme is empowering young Malawians to convert talent into enterprise, create jobs and contribute to inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
