Benghazi, 21 April 2026 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Assorestauro have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation on the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage in Libya, supporting sustainable development, economic recovery, and social cohesion.
The agreement, signed in the presence of the Italian Ambassador, establishes a framework for technical collaboration in the assessment, design, and rehabilitation of heritage sites, alongside capacity development for Libyan professionals.
As part of its long-standing engagement in Libya since 1976, UNDP, now marking 50 years of partnership in the country, has supported the rehabilitation of cultural landmarks and public spaces as part of broader efforts to strengthen local recovery and community resilience. Recent initiatives include the restoration of the historic Al-Manar Palace in Benghazi and the rehabilitation of Sylphium Square, contributing to the revitalisation of public life. In Ghadames, UNDP has also supported heritage preservation efforts, linking cultural assets to local development and social cohesion.
This partnership builds on Italy’s recognised expertise in restoration and conservation. Through the collaboration, Assorestauro will provide technical support and training, working alongside Libyan institutions to strengthen national capacity in heritage restoration.
Speaking at the signing, H.E.Gianluca Alberini, Ambassador of Italy to Libya, said: “Italy stands ready to assist Libya in its reconstruction efforts, providing expertise and technology through its companies, professionals and universities”
“Cultural heritage in Libya is not only about preserving the past, but it is also about investing in the future,” said Dr Sophie Kemkhadze, UNDP Resident Representative in Libya. “This partnership supports restoration efforts that create opportunities, strengthen skills, and ensure this work is led and sustained by Libyans.”
Through this collaboration, priority restoration initiatives will be advanced across Libya, linking heritage preservation with practical outcomes for communities, local economies, and future generations.
