Every step forward in 2025 was powered by partnership.
Working closely with national counterparts and international partners, we turned shared priorities into action, advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
As we continue this journey into 2026, let’s look back at the key moments from each month:
January | SDG 7 – Clean Energy
UNDP took part in Libya’s Energy & Economic Summit, where women leaders highlighted women's role in shaping the country’s energy future. The focus was on renewable energy as a chance for social change and women’s leadership.
February | SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities
Progress on restoring Qasr Al-Akhyar Palace was reviewed with local authorities. With EU support, the site moved closer to reopening as a cultural and economic space for the community.
March | SDG 13 – Climate Action
With support from the EU, staff from the Libyan National Meteorological Centre (LNMC) participated in a study tour in Morocco to strengthen weather forecasting and early warning systems. The work helped Libya better prepare for floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events.
April | SDG 16 – Strong Institutions
A national conference brought together Libyan women leaders to strengthen their roles in international cooperation and decision-making. The event showed strong national support for women’s leadership.
May | SDG 8 – Decent Work
Awatef Sbeta was recognised internationally at the COMFWB Annual Awards in Addis Ababa for her small crochet business, showing how local entrepreneurship can grow with the right support. Her participation was supported by UNDP Libya.
UNDP also met student ambassadors for the first time.
June | SDG 16 – Strong Institutions
Libya held its first-ever National Conference on Business and Human Rights, bringing together government representatives, youth, civil society, and the private sector to promote responsible and people-centred growth.
This conference was organised with the generous support of the European Union, the Republic of Italy and Switzerland.
July | SDG 13 – Climate Action
Libya hosted its first Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) in Shahat, giving young people a platform to shape climate action. At the same time, Libya took steps toward its first climate plan (NDC) with UNDP support.
August | SDG 8 – Decent Work & Economic Growth
UNDP supported the opening of the Tripoli Business Hub, Libya’s first municipality-led business hub. The space was designed by three female municipal engineers and created opportunities for entrepreneurs through shared workspaces, mentorship, and training, helping local businesses grow and communities become more resilient.
September | SDG 7 – Clean Energy
Libya launched its first energy efficiency standards, helping cut energy use. Youth also led green solutions through the EcoLink Camp, turning ideas into practical climate actions on campus.
October | SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities & Communities
Local elections were held in 16 municipalities, strengthening local democracy. UNDP and the EU also showcased heritage projects in Ghadames, while the UN marked its 80th anniversary with the public.
November | SDG 17 – Partnerships
UNDP’s Regional Director visited Libya and met with the Prime Minister, ministers, and senior officials. During the mission, key agreements were signed to support economic diversification, youth opportunities, innovation, and improved public services, including the introduction of artificial intelligence into public administration.
December | SDG 15 – Life on Land
A new USD 5.8 million GEF project was approved to protect land, water, and biodiversity in the Ubari Lakes Basin, supporting communities to adapt to climate change.
