Promoting Women's Political Participation
PROJECT OWNER: UNDP Dominican Republic
Know your candidate (Conoce tu candidata) The initiative showed the profiles and government programs of the 8,412 candidates for congressional and municipal positions in 2020, as well as important information on political participation and the Dominican electoral process. The objective of the initiative is to provide tools that improve the election opportunities of women candidates for congressional and municipal positions in the country, and it was reactivated for the 2024 elections.
In order to support women's political participation, UNDP, together with the Permanent Gender Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, the Ministry of Women, the Central Electoral Board, the German Embassy, the European Union and the Center for Research for Women's Action (CIPAF), and with the collaboration of UN Women, UNFPA, UNICEF and civil society organizations, launched the digital platform " Know your candidate ", which allowed 8,590 women candidates for the 2020 municipal and congressional elections to share plans and proposals virtually. This initiative contributed to achieving an increase in women's political participation during the pandemic and to strengthening governance.
