iVerify: UNDP's Tool for
Fact-Checking and Information Integrity
PROJECT OWNER: UNDP NY, United States
iVerify is a digital solution developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that enables the detection of false information, verification of critical data, and mitigation of misinformation spread in sensitive contexts such as electoral processes. Recognized as a Digital Public Good and registered in the DPG Registry, this tool is designed to protect the integrity of the civic space and strengthen public trust in environments where misinformation poses a direct threat to democratic governance and social cohesion.
Initially implemented in Zambia and Honduras in 2021, iVerify has demonstrated its adaptability to various national contexts, subsequently being used in Kenya in 2022 during its electoral process. In that instance, the tool was used to identify, verify, classify, and disseminate information related to candidates, political statements, and key elements of the electoral process, combining artificial intelligence with human validation through a citizen tipline.
iVerify's operational approach is grounded in principles of political neutrality, multi-stakeholder participation, and long-term sustainability. Through a structured methodology, it engages journalists, civil society actors, electoral bodies, and technology platforms in a collaborative network aimed at reducing the harmful impact of false and manipulative content. The process involves the collection of alerts, verification by trained teams, publication of verified information, and public awareness through media literacy campaigns.
At the methodological level, iVerify can also be deployed through national assessment missions that help diagnose the information ecosystem, map key actors, and design tailored protocols for implementation. These assessments ensure that the system is responsive to the political, social, and technological realities of each country, maximizing its effectiveness and legitimacy.
Currently, iVerify is active in multiple countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Madagascar, Pakistan, and Sierra Leone, supporting both electoral integrity and conflict prevention. Its continued evolution positions UNDP as a key actor in defending truth in the digital space through open, scalable, and human rights-respecting technological tools. iVerify not only combats misinformation but also builds national capacities to strengthen transparency, accountability, and democratic resilience.
