Climate Resilient Water Resources Development

The Project supports Kazakhstan in strengthening climate-resilient and efficient water resources management. It complements the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) project “Climate Resilient Water Resources Development (Phase-1), Tranche-1” by providing technical expertise, facilitating coordination, harmonizing methodologies and promoting international best practices.

The Project responds to increasing pressure on Kazakhstan’s water resources from climate change, water scarcity, floods and droughts, ageing irrigation infrastructure and significant water losses. It will support more integrated planning, digital transformation of the water sector, modern irrigation and stronger institutional capacity.

The Project applies Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) principles and aims to create a common vision and approach for improved water management, increased agricultural productivity and stronger climate resilience.

Project Objectives:

  • Harmonize methodologies and standards for integrated and climate-resilient water resources management;

  • Support digitalization of Kazakhstan’s water sector, including data management, forecasting and decision-support tools;

  • Strengthen institutional capacity for the transition to modern irrigation and improved agricultural productivity;

  • Integrate international best practices and climate change adaptation into dam design and reservoir operation;

  • Strengthen coordination, technical capacity and long-term institutional sustainability in the water sector.
