Addressing Marine Litter and Marine Plastics – A Systemic Approach in the Caspian Sea

The project aims to prevent and reduce marine litter and plastic pollution in the Caspian Sea through improving waste management systems, promoting circular economy principles, stimulating investments in recycling and recovery industries, and engaging local communities, businesses, and government institutions in addressing environmental challenges in coastal regions.

The project is composed of three Components implemented in Kazakhstan:

  1. Improve plastic waste management in the Caspian coastal regions through support for separate collection, recycling infrastructure development, clean-up initiatives, and enhanced monitoring and regulatory mechanisms;

  2. Identify and promote investment opportunities in the waste management sector through assessment of existing infrastructure, development of financing mechanisms, and preparation of regional investment plans;

  3. Strengthen the capacity of local communities, civil society organizations, and businesses through a small grants programme supporting waste reduction, recycling, environmental awareness, and community-led initiatives aimed at reducing plastic pollution.
