Amman, 23 April 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme in Jordan (UNDP) today officially launched the Advancing Food Systems Resilience in Jordan and Kenya project, a pioneering initiative designed to bolster sustainability of food systems in Jordan in the face of rising humanitarian and development challenges.

The Advancing Food Systems Resilience in Jordan and Kenya project, funded through the UNDP Governance, Peacebuilding, Crisis, and Resilience (GPCR) Funding Window with generous contributions from the Governments of Denmark, Luxembourg, and the Republic of Korea, is being ushered in following the release of the UNDP White Paper on Resilient Food Systems, which sets out a comprehensive four-dimensional framework to link and enhance policy innovations for food systems resilience related to climate action.

The project aims to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of food systems by addressing interconnected humanitarian and development challenges. In Jordan, it focuses on:

•    Enhancing evidence-based, integrated programming for food systems resilience.
•    Strengthening food systems governance and strategic frameworks at national and subnational levels.
•    Empowering communities through innovative, area-based solutions for sustainable and resilient food systems.

In her opening speech, the Resident Representative of UNDP Jordan, Randa Aboul-Hosn highlighted that this initiative will build on UNDP’s unique ability to integrate progressive policy interventions, governance reform, and community-led interventions.

Speaking about Jordan’s food security, the Resident Representative emphasised that the new initiative is critical for supporting systemic transformation in the country’s food systems, which is increasingly threatened by climate volatility with rising temperatures and water scarcity.

The inauguration ceremony, held under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture, was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohammad Al-Hiyari, who also delivered a speech on behalf of the Minister in which he welcomed the role of the project in supporting Jordan’s (2021-2030) Food Security Strategy. The Secretary General highlighted the importance of building regional synergies and knowledge, recognising them as fundamental to Jordan’s long-term food security.

The launch event gathered over 60 experts in food security and climate change, including the founder of the Royal Botanic Garden, Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Ali, senior government officials, and representatives from the international community and the private sector in Jordan.

Notes to Editors

The White Paper was launched on World Food Day 2024 by Francine Pickup, Deputy Director of the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support at UNDP. In her Op-Ed in the El Pais newspaper, she called for the system-wide perspective of the White Paper to be adopted by all UN agencies, moving from isolated efforts to effective collaboration among UN agencies, international financial institutions, member states and other stakeholders. “Now more than ever”, she said, “we must dismantle the barriers to progress and build collaborative, sustainable, inclusive and resilient food systems that serve both people and planet.”
