Who are the decision makers?

The UN Resident Coordinator and designated representative of the UN Secretary-General is also the leader of the United Nations Country Team playing a central role in coordinating the UN operational activities for development.

The UNDP Resident Representative is the UNDP Administrator's representative at the country level, and head of the country office being ultimately responsible for the quality and sustainability of UNDP interventions. 

Mr. Claudio Providas (Uruguay and Belgium) is the UNDP Resident Representative in the Islamic Republic of Iran. He joined the UN in 1993 and has been working with UNDP since 1996.

Mr. Providas assumed his duties in Tehran in June 2019.

His work experience is as follows: 

June 2019 - Present:  UNDP Resident Representative, Islamic Republic of Iran

July 2015 – May 2019: UNDP Country Director, Timor-Leste  

Jan 2011 – June 2015: UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Bolivia

Aug 2008 – Jan 2011: UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Ecuador

Sep 2004 – Aug 2008: UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Trinidad & Tobago, and Suriname

Jan 2000 – Aug 2004: Information Manager, Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, UNDP HQ, New York

Mar 1998 – Dec 1999: Information Manager, Emergency Response Division (today Bureau for Crisis) UNDP HQ, New York
