From the 22nd to the 25th of November 2021, UNDP conducted a field mission in the Gabú region of Guinea-Bissau to create and implement a community policing model, which aims to strengthen cooperation between communities and the police thereby improving security response to the population.

During the mission, several meetings were held with the Governor of the region, the local authorities and different groups of decision-makers. A total of 148 people, including 39 women, contributed to the process and the discussions allowed to start developing a preliminary framework for dialogue with the security institutions.

The community policing model was previously implemented in Buba and Bairro Militar, in Bissau, with support from UNIOGBIS, and will now be implemented in the Gabú region.

The initiative by UNDP is conducted under the project “Strengthening the response of the justice and security sectors to drug trafficking and transnational organized crime to reduce insecurity in Guinea-Bissau”, funded by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.
