Bissau, 11 March, 2022 - The National Steering Committee (NSC) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) has approved four new projects to be implemented this year in its work programme. The approval follows the appointment and training of ten NSC members, including a National Coordinator and a Programme Assistant for the administrative, financial, and substantive management of the SGP. The new NSC members are from different civil society organizations, disability organizations, eco-journalists, and NGOs, as well as the Ministries of Agriculture and Fisheries. All the NSC members have extensive experience and knowledge of the local communities’ issues related to the environment and have demonstrated enthusiasm to work with GEF SGP Country Team to mitigate the effects of climate change on the environment. Four environmental NGOs have signed agreements to implement the SGP work programme, which is made up of different projects that will benefit 8 Regions and the Autonomous Sector of Bissau among others.
Guinea-Bissau, a small island developing state, with GEF support and other key partners, will be supported with trainings to encourage behaviourial change on matters related to the environment. Furthermore, the projects identified would contribute to responsible and sustainable fishing through innovative techniques, as well as improved access to safe, and clean drinking water in the regions.
