Candonga di Justisa: Turning the invisible visible in Guinea-Bissau

1 Remote location in Guinea-Bissau. Four girls. Four new beginnings. Ami, Binta, Aua and Cumba have just received their birth certificates - some for the first time. Thanks to Candonga di Justisa, a mobile caravan providing legal and civil registration services, these children have finally become visible to the state.
Without a birth certificate, children are excluded from fundamental rights: they can't attend school, access healthcare or benefit from legal protection. For many families in rural areas, this essential document is a distant dream. But in just one day, Candonga made that dream come true for 37 children from a single community.
Funded by the European Union and implemented by the UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Candonga di Justisa brings dignity and citizenship to places where the courts cannot reach - bringing the state closer to the most isolated communities.
Because justice cannot depend on where you were born.
From the north to the south of Guinea-Bissau, the 2025 edition of Candonga is transforming lives. And the numbers speak for themselves:
Birth registration:
•    Over 1,300 children were registered, most for the first time. More than half are girls.
Community Dialogue - Djumbai:
More than 2200 people took part in community meetings that promoted dialogue on:
•    Domestic violence
•    Early marriage
•    Land rights
•    The importance of the Access to Justice Centres (CAJ)
Each certificate issued is a step towards full citizenship. Every Djumbai is an act of collective empowerment. Because accessible justice is transformative justice.
