Essau, The Gambia, Saturday 2nd August 2025 – The Government of The Gambia, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), officially launched the Essau Model Police Station, a state-of-the-art facility designed to bring policing closer to the people and strengthen community trust, justice delivery, and gender-responsive security services.
The Model Station is the first of its kind in The Gambia and represents a major milestone in the country’s transition toward inclusive, people-centred policing. Constructed through cost-sharing between UNDP, the Government of The Gambia through the Ministry of Interior and the Gambia Police Force, and with land generously donated by the community of Essau, the station is a beacon of collaboration and innovation in public safety.
The new station integrates inclusive design elements such as ramps, accessible counters, and dedicated spaces for gender and child protection. It also features separate detention cells for men, women, and minors in line with international human rights standards, ensuring respect and dignity for all.
Minister of Interior ,Hon. Abdoulie Sanyang, noted that the Essau Model Station sets a new standard for policing in the country:
“This is a flagship achievement for the Gambia Police Force. It reflects our growing focus on building community trust, delivering justice without discrimination, and responding better to issues like sexual and gender-based violence. We will continue to adopt this model in other parts of the country to ensure safety and security for all.”
The station’s construction and furnishing were supported through the Joint Rule of Law and Community Policing Project, co-implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, and UNFPA, with funding from theUN Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) and GIZ. While the PBF project concluded in 2022, the continued commitment of UNDP and the Gambia Police Force ensured the completion of the upgraded station in 2024.
UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to inclusive and people-focused governance:
“This model police station is a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when communities, governments, and development partners come together with a shared vision. By centering justice and security on the needs of the people, especially women, children, and persons with disabilities, we are not just building safer communities; we are building the foundation for sustainable peace and inclusive development.”
Since 2019, UNDP and its partners have led a national transformation of the justice and policing landscape in The Gambia. Achievements under the wider programme include the establishment of Community Policing Forums, training of over 800 officers and citizens, legal aid for more than 15,000 people, prison reform, digitization of court systems, and support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
The Essau Model Police Station now stands as a flagship outcome of this multi-year effort—setting the blueprint for community-centered policing and reinforcing The Gambia’s commitment to transitional justice, human rights, and accountable public institutions.
