An Assessment of Bangladesh’s Media Landscape: Free, Independent, and Pluralistic Media
An Assessment of Bangladesh’s Media Landscape: Free, Independent, and Pluralistic Media
July 15, 2025
In the wake of Bangladesh’s July–August 2024 mass uprising, UNDP and UNESCO jointly undertook this landmark assessment to better understand the country’s evolving media landscape and support the growing demand for meaningful reform. Developed between July and December 2024, the report offers a timely, evidence-based analysis of the legal, institutional, financial, and professional challenges facing the media sector. It highlights structural constraints such as restrictive laws, market distortions, poor working conditions, safety risks, and gender inequality while also identifying pathways for reform. The findings are grounded in international human rights standards and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16. This assessment aims to inform national dialogue, support media reform efforts, and help build a resilient, inclusive, and pluralistic media environment in Bangladesh.
