Myanmar at a Crossroads: Past Trends of Human Well-Being and a Future Outlook
Myanmar at a Crossroads: Past Trends of Human Well-Being and a Future Outlook
April 10, 2023
This UNDP report uses a household-based Human Development Index (H-HDI) to track progress and disparities in human development across Myanmar between 2005 and 2017, with projections beyond 2020 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 military takeover. The analysis shows that while human development rose by 46% over the study period, these gains were uneven, with widening rural–urban gaps, significant disparities across states and regions, and increasing polarization linked to education and location. The report highlights how recent crises have reversed progress, leaving households facing income shocks, food insecurity, depleted assets, and disrupted access to health and education. It emphasizes the urgent need for inclusive policies that prioritize vulnerable households, address inequalities, and prevent further polarization that risks fueling conflict and undermining development gains.
