Background
In Nepal, on 26 August 2026, a massive flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River, originating in the high-altitude border areas of Rasuwa District caused severe loss of life, widespread displacement, and extensive damage to property and infrastructure.
According to the latest release by Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the number of people killed in Nepal has risen to 675 (as of 29 August 2026, time: 21:29). Officials say more than 7,500 people have been rescued, nearly 2,500 are missing, and 219 people have been injured in the disaster.
The NDRRMA says that over 18,700 rescuers have been deployed to help with the search operation.
UNDP’s Role in Flood Response and Early Recovery
In support of this nationally led response, the United Nations is working closely with humanitarian partners. As part of this collective effort, UNDP Nepal is actively contributing to the response through data coordination, information management, and early recovery planning. UNDP has activated its corporate Rapid Assessment for Post-Disaster Action (RAPIDA) framework. This tool is designed to quickly assess damage and recovery needs, directly informing immediate relief and structuring early recovery efforts.
The disaster is a stark reminder of the increasing climate-related risks facing mountain communities, highlighting the importance of investing in climate adaptation, resilience, early warning systems, and measures to address the impacts of glacier retreat and melting on people's lives, livelihoods, and critical services.
