Background
In Nepal, on 26 August 2026, a massive flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River, originating in the high-altitude border areas of Rasuwa District caused severe loss of life, widespread displacement, and extensive damage to property and infrastructure.
UNDP’s Role in Flood Response and Early Recovery
In support of this nationally led response, the United Nations is working closely with humanitarian partners. As part of this collective effort, UNDP Nepal is actively contributing to the response through data coordination, information management, and early recovery planning.
UNDP has initiated its corporate Rapid Assessment for Post-Disaster Action (RAPIDA) framework. The assessment brings together available government data satellite-based damage assessments and other geospatial and socioeconomic information to provide an initial picture of the impacts vulnerabilities associated with the disaster.
Key Findings:
The Government's approved estimated affected population: 84,270 people over 17 municipalities in 6 districts - Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitawan, Gorkha and Tanahu
Around 76% of the population in affected municipalities lives in municipalities with above-average pre-flood vulnerability, based on the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index calculated from Nepal’s 2021 National Population and Housing Census.
An estimated 556,200 tonnes of building-related debris are associated with currently assessed buildings, with a broader indicative estimate of 2.2 million tonnes including personal property, vegetation, rock and sediment mobilized by the floods.
Preliminary modelling estimates USD 158.6 million in potential building damage, with a ±30% uncertainty range. This does not represent total disaster losses.
These are preliminary modelled estimates intended to support early decision-making and prioritization. They do not represent confirmed damage, displacement or service disruption and should be validated through field assessments.
UNDP's RAPIDA Assessment of the Floods in Nepal
The disaster is a stark reminder of the increasing climate-related risks facing mountain communities, highlighting the importance of investing in climate adaptation, resilience, early warning systems, and measures to address the impacts of glacier retreat and melting on people's lives, livelihoods, and critical services.
