Building Judicial Excellence Through Self-Assessment and Action Planning

UNDP is supporting judiciaries in ASEAN to promote transparency, integrity, and accountability and to fulfill their obligations under Article 11 of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

Supported by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub is nurturing a network of judges in the ASEAN, which supports target countries in pursuing judicial reforms, focusing particularly on transparency, accountability, integrity, accessibility, and court excellence, promoting knowledge exchange and peer-support.

As part of the third phase of the JIN ASEAN project, UNDP provides funding and supports member countries to facilitate institutional development and improvement aimed at judicial excellence in Indonesia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

In 2022-2023 JIN ASEAN will support country-specific activities that:

  1. Support capacity development of courts on approaches for court excellence and judicial integrity using tools such as the Judicial Integrity Checklist and International Framework for Court Excellence self-assessment.
  2. Improve court excellence and access to justice or judicial integrity through the knowledge and use of new technologies.
  3. Have the potential to be scaled up or replicated at courts in the country or regional level.
  4. Develop and implement action plans to implement the recommendations identified through self-assessments.
  5. Implement innovative judicial excellence initiatives, including those related to the use of new technologies and targeting gender equality.
