BIOFIN
The Biodiversity Finance Initiative
Overview
Since 2012, and under the coordination of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the BIOFIN initiative has been implemented in more than 133 countries, including Argentina. Its main objective is to mobilize financing sources to close the biodiversity financing gap.
To achieve this, BIOFIN applies a methodology that analyzes the policy, legal and institutional architecture; assesses existing expenditures and investments; estimates the cost of achieving biodiversity targets; and develops a financial plan to address them.
BIOFIN in Argentina
The BIOFIN initiative began in Argentina halfway through 2022 with a strategic approach focused on working on a national level, as well as two provincial tryout projects. In this context, the National Biodiversity Strategy is being budgeted and a Financing Plan is being developed to support its implementation, in collaboration with national authorities. At the same time, BIOFIN is working with representatives from Chaco and Misiones to develop specific Financing Plans for these provinces.
The financial solutions currently being implemented include the world’s first jaguar protection insurance scheme; the development of a web platform connecting governments, organizations and local communities with international financing opportunities; a feasibility study for biodiversity credits; and an analysis to identify and redirect subsidies that are harmful to biodiversity.
FIRE Argentina
FIRE (Finance Resources for Biodiversity) Argentina is a tool designed to facilitate access to key information on financing for nature. Its objective is to connect governments, organizations and local communities with international financing opportunities that promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Through this platform, you can access available financing sources in Argentina and useful resources to identify and apply for funds that promote positive impacts on our ecosystems. The tool allows users to identify options that match specific criteria, such as type of funding source, financing amount, or type of organization.
