Youth for Sustainability (Y4S) is a core component of the Green Growth and Jobs Accelerator Project (GGJAP), implemented across all project countries through country-level youth networks. Supporting GGJAP’s broader objective of promoting green growth and job creation for young people, the initiative equips approximately 60 youth annually across the countries with skills in sustainability, entrepreneurship, innovation, and problem-solving through training, mentorship, and practical activities. Following this preparation, youth participants engage directly with SMEs participating in the Accelerator through internships, hackathons, and innovation activities focused on the SME’s real operational challenges.

In Jordan, Y4S evolved in 2025 into a hands-on co-creation approach where youth and SMEs were brought together to work directly on operational and sustainability challenges faced by the SMEs. This approach was implemented in Aqaba through a three-day hackathon and capacity building workshop held  in October 2025, involving 12 youth participants and five SMEs working in sectors linked to tourism, sustainability, and the blue economy. Aqaba was selected exactly because of its relevance in these sectors, particularly  tourism and blue economy-related activities.

The workshop combined design thinking, brainstorming sessions, mentorship, and direct collaboration between youth and SMEs. Participants worked side-by-side with businesses to identify operational challenges and co-develop practical solutions addressing sustainability. While SMEs were initially expected to attend selected sessions only, all five businesses remained actively engaged throughout the full three-day programme. According to the Jordan Y4S team, this level of engagement exceeded expectations and demonstrated the strong interest from SMEs in working directly with young innovators.

For the participating youth, the workshop was an opportunity to work directly on real-life challenges.

“The workshop improved my ability to think under pressure and use design thinking to build realistic solutions that could contribute to protecting the marine environment in Aqaba. It was interesting to see how these challenges could be transformed into practical and applicable solutions within the blue economy.” says Nour Al Huda, a Y4S participant who joined the event.

During the workshop, youth participants and SMEs co-developed 10 solutions. One of these was developed in collaboration with Hakaya Hostel, one of the accelerated SMEs, which was facing high electricity consumption and operational costs linked to guests’ use of lighting and electricity in rooms and common areas. Together, the youth participants and the SME developed a “Smart Sensor System for Energy Efficiency” concept, focused on integrating motion and electricity sensors to support more efficient energy use across the hostel. The solution is currently being implemented, with the team and SME collecting offers and pricing for the proposed sensors and efficiency tools.

“My experience with the Y4S network helped me develop skills in design thinking and gave me experience in working with real businesses. It also showed me how technology and artificial intelligence can contribute to a more sustainable future,” says another Y4S participant Salsabeel Asre.

Other examples developed during the workshop included:

  • Eco-friendly bag printing solutions replacing plastic stickers with reusable stamping designs
  • Floating waste collection bins designed to remove waste from ports and marinas
  • A digital platform helping businesses and customers track their carbon footprint
  • A café concept using edible cups to reduce single-use waste
  • For participating youths, the workshop provided an opportunity to apply technical and sustainability knowledge to real business challenges while working directly with entrepreneurs and SMEs. For businesses, the process created space to test new ideas and explore practical sustainability solutions that could later be implemented in their operations.

Key results

  • 12 youth participants engaged in practical co-creation activities with SMEs
  • 5 GGJAP SMEs participated directly in the Aqaba innovation workshop
  • 10 practical green and business innovation solutions were developed
  • 1 youth participant was hired by one of the SMEs following the workshop
  • SMEs contributed operational insights, mentorship, and feedback throughout the process

The Jordan experience demonstrated how Y4S can foster young talent while also supporting SMEs by connecting youth participants directly with the businesses. By combining innovation, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving, the initiative,  created practical opportunities for youth to contribute to tangible business challenges while helping SMEs explore new ideas, perspectives, and sustainability-focused solutions.
