Rapid damage assessment estimates over US$365 Million in building damage across Beirut and Mount Lebanon
June 9, 2026
Beirut —The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in coordination with the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS-L) and in collaboration with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), has announced the results of a rapid assessment of damaged buildings in Beirut and Mount Lebanon. The assessment aims to provide accurate preliminary estimates of the extent of damage and support recovery and reconstruction planning efforts in the affected areas.
The assessment relied on GeoAI technologies, satellite imagery analysis, and field verification exercises to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data.
The findings indicate that direct damage to buildings is estimated at more than USD 365 million, while the volume of debris generated by the damage is estimated at approximately 648,942 cubic metres. The assessment also identified a clear concentration of damage in several areas, notably Haret Hreik, Hadath, Chiyah, Burj El Barajneh, Laylaki, and Choueifat–Amroussieh.
The results show that 146 buildings were completely destroyed and 264 buildings sustained partial damage. At the housing unit level, 3,168 housing units were completely destroyed, while 4,437 housing units were partially damaged.
These findings provide an initial evidence base to support national authorities and partners in prioritizing and directing recovery and reconstruction efforts more effectively and sustainably, contributing to the faster recovery of affected communities and helping them return to normal life.
