Ministry of Agriculture and UNDP Launch a project to produce and distribute 1.5 Million vegetable seedlings with support from the German government under the “Together for Food Security” Campaign

1.5 Million Vegetable Seedlings to Strengthen Food Security and Agricultural Resilience

June 16, 2026

At a time when the Lebanese agricultural sector is facing growing challenges due to Israeli attacks and the repercussions of successive crises, Germany, through KfW Development Bank and in partnership with UNDP, is supporting the Ministry of Agriculture in strengthening food security through practical initiatives that help vulnerable farmers maintain and enhance local agricultural production.

In this context, the Ministry is continuing the implementation of the “Together for Food Security” campaign by launching a project to produce and distribute 1.5 million vegetable seedlings of various varieties, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the German Government through KfW Development Bank. This significant initiative aims to enhance local agricultural production, expand cultivated areas, and support farming families across Lebanon.

The project represents one of the key components of the Ministry’s Agricultural Response and Recovery Plan. It contributes to revitalizing the agricultural production cycle and providing essential farming inputs to affected farmers, thereby strengthening their ability to continue production, secure their livelihoods, and maintain the stability of rural communities.

Germany is the top bilateral donor to Lebanon and invests significantly in food security and agricultural resilience. To assist people affected by war and displacement, Germany has made available a total of 153.3 M. Euros in humanitarian and development assistance during 2026. The first phase of the project includes the production and distribution of 500,000 vegetable seedlings of different varieties. These seedlings will be distributed to farmers in areas located more than 500 meters above sea level, across various Lebanese governorates whose climatic conditions are suitable for cultivating these crops during the current season.

The seedlings have been produced at the Ministry of Agriculture’s nursery in Abdeh, Akkar, which serves as a model of the Ministry’s developmental role in promoting local production and providing high-quality agricultural inputs. This supports the state’s efforts to enhance food self-sufficiency and achieve more sustainable agricultural development.

The seedlings are being distributed to farmers registered in the National Farmers Registry through the Ministry’s agricultural centers, in coordination with municipal unions and municipalities, according to clear and transparent mechanisms that ensure fair distribution of support and its delivery to eligible beneficiaries.

Germany is partnering with the Ministry of Agriculture on its comprehensive vision to rebuild the capacities of the agricultural sector and strengthen its resilience in the face of crises. This is being achieved through investment in local production, support for agricultural value chains, and empowering farmers to continue their vital role in safeguarding national food security.

The Ministry of Agriculture reaffirms its commitment to expanding cooperation with international partners, donor agencies, and local institutions, based on the firm conviction that supporting Lebanese farmers is a direct investment in Lebanon’s resilience and economic and social stability. Agriculture will remain the first line of defense for food security and sustainable development.

Together for Food Security—because agriculture is the heartbeat of the land and of life, and because every seedling planted today is another step toward a safer, more stable, and more prosperous future for Lebanon.

About the project

This initiative is funded by the German Government through KfW Development Bank under the UNDP  project “Improving Food Security in Lebanon through Revival of the Seed Production Value Chain at LARI.” The project aims to strengthen Lebanon’s food security by revitalizing the national wheat seed production system, rehabilitating key agricultural infrastructure, enhancing the availability of quality agricultural inputs, and strengthening the capacities and resilience of farmers and agricultural institutions, particularly the Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute (LARI) and the Ministry of Agriculture.
