How can digital marketplaces bridge African markets? Lessons from Ghana and Kenya

December 10, 2025

This report, based on mapping exercises conducted between December 2023 and July 2024, explores the extent to which digital marketplaces in Ghana and Kenya enable intra- African trade in goods. The findings reveal that most digital marketplaces in these countries facilitate only domestic transactions, with just one marketplace in each country successfully facilitating intra-African transactions.

These exceptional cases share key characteristics: both specialize in African cultural products (art, handicrafts and fashion), were regionally focused at launch, integrate a range of third party service providers and operate business-to- business and business-to-consumer models that accommodate various transaction sizes and types. Their success demonstrates untapped potential for digital marketplaces that specialize in made-in-Africa goods.
