UNDP Mali

Bamako, Mali - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with Asahi Kasei Fibers Italia, Brunello and the Japanese Embassy, organized a collective intelligence workshop aimed at supporting women dyers in Mali and promoting sustainable practices in the traditional dyeing sector. The event brought together local, regional and international actors, as well as experts in sustainable development to find innovative solutions to the challenges faced by women dyers.

The traditional dyeing sector in Mali is a valuable cultural and economic heritage. However, the use of chemicals that are harmful to health and the environment is a major challenge for women dyers and the sustainability of the industry. Health problems associated with chemical exposure include skin and respiratory problems, while the environment is also affected by current practices.

The objective of this workshop was to raise awareness of the challenges associated with the use of chemicals and to facilitate collaboration between different stakeholders to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. The design thinking methodology was used to encourage creativity and innovation, and the women dyers themselves were actively involved in the process of developing the solutions.

The expected outcomes of the workshop include the identification of sustainable alternatives to traditional chemicals, the improvement of working conditions for women dyers and the promotion of environmental conservation and sustainability in the traditional dyeing sector.

UNDP, the Japanese Embassy, Asahi Kasei Fibers Italia and Brunello are proud to have supported this event and to have contributed to improving the quality of life of women dyers in Mali and to promoting more sustainable practices for the entire traditional dyeing industry.
