Event Overview

The "2nd Model African Union (MAU) General Assembly" will be held on August 20, where young people from Japan and Africa who will lead the next generation will engage in serious discussions about Africa's future. In this event, students serving as country representatives will present draft resolutions on important issues such as economy, youth policy, and education, and will challenge themselves to reach consensus through official debates and voting.

Background

The MAU conference in Japan aims to promote dialogue and mutual understanding between young people from Africa and Japan, enabling youth to lead discussions on sustainable development and partnerships among African countries. This initiative seeks to promote co-creation between Japanese and African youth and challenge fixed ideas and stereotypes about Africa. Students participating this time will serve as ministers of various countries, simulating the African Union (AU) Commission's Specialized Technical Committees (STC) and General Assembly.

The theme of the 2nd MAU is "Inayojumuisha: Youth Co-creation, Shaping Africa's Future." This theme embodies a powerful vision where youth voices are not just "heard" but are at the center of "shaping" Africa's future. "Inayojumuisha" means "inclusion" in Swahili and represents the core philosophy of the 2nd MAU. It aims to ensure that all voices from Japan, Africa, and other regions are respected, expressed, and accepted. This demonstrates the strong commitment of the next generation of youth to become the protagonists of Africa's sustainable and inclusive development.

MAU participants spend approximately two months preparing position papers for their assigned countries and will discuss the following three agenda items at the STCs held on August 19:

  1. STC on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning, and Integration:
Youth Engagement for Africa’s Solidarity in the Global Economy
  2. STC on Youth, Culture, and Sports:
    Youth for Political Reform
  3. STC on Education, Science, and Technology:
Building Self-Sustaining Wealth and Digital Infrastructure for Youth in Africa

On August 20, delegates will simulate the proceedings of the African Union General Assembly, discuss the final resolution, and vote on it.
