Earthquakes in the Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman Provinces, Afghanistan 2025 (November 2025)
The Joint Rapid Recovery Needs Assessment (JRRNA) Report outlines the impact of the 6.0-magnitude earthquakes that struck Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman on 31 August 2025. The quakes claimed 1,992 lives (1,022 women), injured 3,631 people (1,830 women), and damaged or destroyed over 8,300 homes, leaving thousands displaced.
Led by the United Nations, UNDP, the EU, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and 14 partners, the JRRNA estimates US$ 86.8 million in damages and losses, and recovery needs amounting to a total of US$ 128.8 million.

The JRRNA Report outlines a recovery vision and strategy guided by principles of local leadership and community ownership, conflict sensitivity, gender-responsive and disability-inclusive programming, particularly in areas hosting displaced and returnee families. The JRRNA recommends a build back better approach to ensure that restored systems are safer, more sustainable, and better prepared for future shocks.
