Annual Consultation on Governance and RoL

4th Annual Consultation on Governance and Rule of Law

Since 2017, UNDP Yemen has organised high-level Annual Consultations in the area of governance and rule of law. Successfully bringing together stakeholders from both parties to the conflict, UNDP Yemen’s forum is now firmly established as one of the rare peacebuilding instruments available.

The Annual Consultation process has promoted dialogues not only between formal institutions between the north and the south, but also across the cross-sections of Yemeni society - including marginalised voices of women, youth and persons with disabilities (UN Enable). The vertical links between local authorities and communities, created and reinforced by the Annual Consultation process, offer opportunities for inclusive and participatory governance and rule of law, a key element for local peacebuilding and national peacemaking in Yemen.

Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, UNDP Yemen successfully held the 4th Annual Consultation on an online platform, joined by approximately 200 participants across multiple time zones. Securing the local participation of Yemeni partners from both Sana’a and Aden, the event continues to maintain and expand the momentum towards multi-year engagement and trust-building.

Administered by the Governance and Rule of Law (GRoL) Team of UNDP Yemen - jointly with other UN offices and agencies, such as OSESGY, UNICEF, UN Women and UNFPA - the Annual Consultation has been, and will continue to be, a key mechanism to foster an inclusive partnership across formal institutions, civil society organisations, marginalised populations, donors and the diplomatic community, bringing a shared commitment for a peaceful and prosperous future of Yemen.
