Beyond the Conflict Report

April 14, 2026

As Sudan enters the fourth year of a war that has created the world's largest humanitarian crisis, pushing millions into poverty, devastating the economy and disrupting the lives of an entire generation, Beyond the Conflict: Charting a Path to Sustainable Growth and Development in Sudan, produced by UNDP and the Institute for Security Studies, is the most comprehensive quantitative assessment yet of what this conflict has cost and what it will continue to cost if fighting continues.

Using the International Futures modelling platform, the report projects three scenarios: the damage already locked in, with income levels now as low as they were in 1990s; the far greater losses if conflict continues to 2030, which would push a further 34 million people into extreme poverty; and a "Sudan Rising" path that shows what peace combined with reform and investment could deliver, including 17 million people lifted out of poverty and GDP more than doubling by 2043.
