Adverse Impact of the Triple Crisis on Food Insecurity and Livelihoods in Sudan

Adverse Impact of the Triple Crisis on Food Insecurity and Livelihoods in Sudan
June 24, 2025
This report analyses how food insecurity, financial crisis and energy shortages have combined to create a “triple crisis” in Sudan.
Produced by UNDP, FAO, IOM, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and I-APS, the assessment also outlines policy options and actions that can be taken to improve financial stability and energy production, both of which are key to boosting agriculture and food supplies.
Key topics include:
- Food crisis: Over the last decade, Sudan has became increasingly reliant on expensive food imports, reducing access for large parts of the population.
- Energy crisis: Following the independence of South Sudan, Sudan became a net importer of energy, making the country more vulnerable to international oil price rises, which have dramatically increased the cost of local food production.
- Financial crisis: The fall in value of the Sudanese Pound has combined with inflation to drive up the cost of agricultural inputs and food prices, exacerbating food insecurity.
