Clean Energy and Resilience to Climate Change

UNDP supports Sudan’s transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future by expanding access to clean energy and water, protecting natural ecosystems and helping communities adapt to climate change. These efforts support 2.7 million people, while building stronger institutions and systems that help communities live healthier lives, find new economic opportunities and stay safe from disaster risks.

We expand access to clean, decentralized solar energy in off-grid and underserved areas, supporting households, farms and public services. Our solar power projects improve access to water, support smallholder farmers and reduce reliance on expensive and polluting fuels. Clean energy solutions for transport, irrigation and community services help strengthen livelihoods and improve daily life, particularly in remote areas. Solar-powered public lighting helps create safer shared spaces, especially for women and vulnerable groups, and supports economic and social activities after dark.

Our work improves access to safe and reliable water through climate-resilient infrastructure, such as rehabilitated and newly constructed water sources, managed by community-based governance structures to strengthen local decision-making and long-term sustainability.

UNDP supports communities to better prepare for and respond to climate shocks by strengthening early warning systems, disaster risk planning and climate-resilient agriculture. These efforts help households anticipate floods, droughts and extreme weather; protect productive assets; and recover more quickly when shocks occur. Gender-responsive approaches ensure that women and marginalized groups are actively involved and benefit from resilience-building initiatives.

At the national and subnational levels, UNDP strengthens climate governance by building institutional capacity, improving coordination and supporting inclusive and accountable decision-making. We work with government partners to advance climate policies, integrate climate finance into national systems and align national commitments with international climate agreements. This includes support to revise Nationally Determined Contributions, develop a circular economy roadmap and establish Sudan’s Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification system.

Our support also extends to biodiversity conservation, protecting terrestrial and marine ecosystems while mobilizing domestic and international resources for long-term environmental sustainability.

Together, these actions link clean energy, water, agriculture and governance to make communities safer, healthier and more prosperous.
