Khartoum, May 4, 2026 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) welcomes a contribution of US$ 1.94 million from the Government of Japan for two new projects to foster local-level peacebuilding, improve aid access and create a safe environment for economic recovery.

As Sudan continues to face the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with nearly 34 million people in need and over 13 million displaced, these projects will focus on conflict-affected areas, including Khartoum State, where 1.5 million returnees are struggling to access basic services and livelihood opportunities.

“Sudan urgently needs both humanitarian aid and social cohesion. By engaging in projects that address both, we aim to improve life for the people of Sudan and pave the way for a better, peaceful future,” said Takanobu Nakahara, Chargé d’Affaires of Japan to Sudan.

The first project will re-establish the Peace Center at the University of Khartoum, providing space for impartial dialogue between institutions, communities and organizations run by women and youth. The project will also facilitate humanitarian access for vulnerable people by strengthening capacity at the Humanitarian Aid Commission through improvements in administration and coordination.

The second project will make areas safer for economic activity in Sudan. This includes unexploded ordnance risk assessments and clearance, as well as improvements to women’s business hubs in Khartoum State and the provision of guarantees and loans for women-led businesses. Together, these efforts will directly improve economic conditions for 10,000 small business owners.

“We are extremely grateful for Japan’s generous funding of projects that will provide an enabling environment for economic recovery and local peacebuilding,” said Luca Renda, UNDP Sudan’s Resident Representative. “Through this support for national capacities and the expansion of business opportunities, we can ensure recovery efforts are sustainable and inclusive.”
