About the Project

The Plastics Circularity Project aims to address the critical issue of plastic waste management in ten countries across Asia. This initiative targets countries with varying levels of waste management infrastructure and plastic waste challenges, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The project supports the transition to a circular economy by promoting sustainable plastic waste practices, reducing environmental leakage, and enhancing livelihoods—particularly for women and marginalized communities.

In Sri Lanka, the project is implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government, the Waste Management Authority of the Western Province, and Local Authorities in the Colombo District. The country-specific interventions are designed to address the growing challenge of plastic pollution, which exacerbates urban flooding, threatens biodiversity, and impacts public health.

The project also contributes to Sri Lanka’s national development priorities under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), particularly Outcome 3, which focuses on enhancing community resilience to climate-induced disaster risks and promoting sustainable natural resource management.

Project Objectives

  • Output 1: Systemic approach to plastic waste management adopted and practiced at the selected Local Authorities.
  • Output 2: BAT/BEP options are introduced to implement strategies developed under Output 1.
  • Output 3: Implement a phased campaign over the project period (3 years) on plastic pollution prevention and build capacity of Local Authorities and stakeholders.
  • Output 4: Share lessons learned from demonstrations and interventions at the selected project locations, across LA areas.
