MEDIA ADVISORY - 5th BIOFIN Global Conference on New Opportunities to Finance Conservation

May 8, 2023

Planet Earth needs USD824 billion per year to restore and protect its imperilled ecosystems necessary to our livelihood, according to a 2020 study by the Nature Conservancy, Paulson Institute and Cornell University. However, only USD121 billion is spent on average per year to preserve biodiversity. To bridge this gap, the United Nations Development Programme’s Biodiversity Finance Initiative (UNDP-BIOFIN) will convene over 180 biodiversity finance experts and government members at the 5th BIOFIN Global Conference, 9-11 May 2023.

Delegates from more than 45 countries will share insights and experiences to inspire more action to preserve life and nature in every corner of the globe, engaging in diverse discussions around opportunities to finance biodiversity such as finance sector engagement, positive incentives, impact investment, repurposing harmful subsidies, community engagement and others.

Media is invited to cover the opening session of the conference on 09 May 2023. Please indicate your interest to Mr. Ntokozo Mahlangu: ntokozo.mahlangu@undp.org or 060 533 6760.
