3D Printing: The Future of Work and Opportunities for Developing Countries

July 11, 2025

The guidance product by UNDP’s Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (ICPSD), developed in partnership with the HP Foundation, explores how 3D printing can become a catalyst for entrepreneurship, and digital transformation in developing countries.

As one of the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, 3D printing enables localized, flexible, and low-barrier manufacturing that can reduce reliance on global supply chains and foster innovation at the community level. The report illustrates how 3D printing can support new forms of employment from online freelance design to distributed micro-manufacturing while also lowering the risks and costs for entrepreneurs.

It also highlights real-world applications, ecosystem enablers, and policy considerations to help governments, industry actors, and development practitioners harness the full potential of additive manufacturing. Special attention is given to workforce development and the design of skilling programmes aligned with future-of-work trends.

This publication is produced under the “Entrepreneurial Skills Development Initiative for the SDGs,” a collaboration between UNDP ICPSD and the HP Foundation to promote future-ready entrepreneurial opportunities globally.
