Less than 5 per cent of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) unique environment - rich with biodiversity - is currently protected. Management of this small area has been patchy and problematic - with many areas completely or partially cleared, losing many of their intrinsic values.

With PNG’s Government committed to tripling the amount of land and sea areas safeguarded by 2020, this report details specific and practical ways areas can be managed appropriately. It argues that any future management will require long-term support and commitment from not only governments but communities, civil society and industry. It sets out clear guidelines, including creating management roles and structures, with on-the-ground rangers, increasing awareness and education, and developing short and long-term plans and activities, to be strictly adhered to. 

Significant financial support is also important in maintaining critical areas of biodiversity within this resource-rich land. This assessment is an important tool for the future protection of PNG’s unique biodiversity.
